The short version

What counts as brass scrap

Brass is a mix of copper and zinc, which is why it's worth more than plain steel but usually less than pure copper. It shows up in plumbing fittings, old taps, door and window hardware, curtain rails, valves, ammunition casings and a lot of industrial offcuts. If you've pulled it out of a wall, a workshop or a demolition job, there's a good chance it's worth selling rather than binning.

01

Plumbing fittings

Old taps, valves, pipe joints and fixtures pulled out during a bathroom or kitchen renovation.

02

Hardware & fixtures

Door handles, hinges, curtain rails and other household brass hardware.

03

Industrial offcuts

Brass turnings, bar offcuts and fittings from workshops, factories and demolition sites.

Why it matters

Why recycle brass instead of binning it

Brass can be melted down and reused without losing quality, so recycled brass does the same job as new brass. Making brass from recycled metal takes a lot less energy than mining and processing raw copper and zinc, which is part of why scrap brass holds decent value. Recycling it also keeps it out of landfill and out of general waste, where it just sits doing nothing for anyone.

Brass pickup, step by step

How brass scrap collection works

Short answer, you describe what you've got, get a rough phone quote, then a pickup is arranged. Payment happens after the brass is weighed and checked. For a bigger job, like clearing an entire plumbing renovation or a workshop clean out, call ahead so the right vehicle and enough hands turn up.

  1. Describe your brass

By phone, form or in person, with a rough amount and what it is, taps, fittings, offcuts, and so on.

  2. Get a rough value

Based on condition, how clean or mixed it is, and current market rates.

  3. Pickup or drop off

A pickup gets arranged for bigger loads, or you can drop it off at the yard yourself.

  4. Weighed & sorted

Brass is weighed and checked. Loads sorted away from other metals usually price better than mixed loads.

  5. Get paid

Get paid on the spot once the load is weighed and checked.

Prices move with global markets

What affects brass scrap prices

Short answer

How clean and sorted the brass is, current market rates, and whether it's mixed in with other metals or plastic.

Brass is a non ferrous metal, so it's worth more per kilo than ferrous metals like steel, but usually less than pure copper. Clean brass fittings with no plastic, rubber or steel attached are worth more than the same weight of mixed scrap, because the mixed material has to be sorted out before the brass can be recycled.

Exact prices aren't listed here because they shift with global markets, sometimes week to week. A dealer can only give you a real number once they know roughly how much you've got and what condition it's in. If you want current pricing, it's more reliable to call and ask than to trust a number you saw somewhere else online, since those go stale fast.

The part most scrap dealers skip

What NSW law requires when you sell brass scrap

Scrap metal dealers must not carry on a business of dealing in scrap metal without the business being registered under the Act, and heavy penalties apply for breaching the legislation. Registered dealers are prohibited from paying for scrap metal with cash, cheque payable to cash, or in kind with goods or services, and must keep a record of each transaction, including details of the person selling the metal.

  • Bring valid photo ID to the transaction.
  • Expect to give payment details, like a bank account, instead of getting cash in hand.
  • Don't be surprised if a legitimate dealer asks where a large amount of brass came from, that's the law, not the dealer being difficult.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Usually yes. Brass is a non ferrous metal, like copper, so it's worth more per kilo than ferrous metals such as steel. Clean, sorted brass fittings are worth more than brass mixed in with other metals or attached to plastic and rubber.

Yes. Pickup is part of the standard service across NSW, not something you pay extra for. For a bigger load, book ahead so the right vehicle turns up.

Old taps, fittings, valves, door handles, hinges, curtain rails, brass ammunition casings, industrial offcuts and brass pipe. If you're not sure whether something is brass, describe it when you call rather than guessing.

No. Under the Scrap Metal Industry Act 2016 and the Scrap Metal Industry Regulation 2024, registered NSW dealers can't pay cash for scrap. Payment is traceable, usually paid to a bank account.

Yes. Valid photo ID is required by law. Dealers have to keep a record of who sold them the metal, so this applies everywhere in NSW, not just with this business.

It helps. A mixed load is often priced at the rate of whatever metal in it is worth least, so keeping brass separate from steel or aluminium usually gets you a better result.

Bring your ID, and if you're selling in bulk or as a business, be ready with payment details since cash isn't a legal payment method for scrap in NSW. For bigger jobs, mention the volume and location upfront for a faster, more accurate quote.
